What is a custody evaluation?
A custody evaluation is an evaluation of the parents and their child conducted by a professional evaluator in a custody case used to determine what custody and parent time arrangement is in the best interests of the child. Qualified custody evaluators must have specialized training and they often hold advanced degrees in psychiatry, psychology or counseling. As part of the evaluation, the evaluator will interview the parents and the child together and separately to learn about their respective parenting abilities and relationship with the child. Parents may request a custody evaluation, and courts sometimes order these evaluations even without a request from either parent. Custody evaluations are expensive. A typical custody evaluation will cost between $5,000 and $10,000. Courts usually order that this cost be split between the parents.
